CCL Tears

CCL Tears in Pets

Like humans, animals depend on their muscles and ligaments to move, respond, and function. If your pet encountered a cranial cruciate ligament injury, or CCL, due to vigorous exercise or aging, he or she may have excruciating pain. At Desert Forest Animal Hospital in Cave Creek, AZ, we offer treatment that will provide relief and help improve your pet’s mobility. Learn more about CCL tears below:

What is a CCL Tear?

The cruciate ligament is located at the front of the knee and helps your legs move and stay stable. The ligament attaches the tibia and femur, while the knee is located in between. When a CLL tear occurs, your cat or dog may feel intense pain. With the separation of the CCL, either from bones or between joints, the knee won’t work properly. As a result, your pet will experience discomfort and a loss of mobility.

Treatment for a CCL Tear

A ligament tear typically has to be addressed with pet surgery. Our veterinarians will help reattach the surgery so that it can heal correctly. Failure to reconnect a torn ligament results in permanent lameness, which means your pet will be dependent on care. Without pet surgery, the ligaments will not grow back on their own.
