Pet Euthanasia FAQ

Pet Euthanasia

You look at your pet, and you know that it is not doing well. It may be older, sick or a combination of the two. This leaves you with a conundrum - do you let it go naturally or do you help it reach the end with euthanasia?

We know that making the decision to go ahead with euthanasia can be a hard one and you may have questions. That is why we made this FAQ to help you.

How Is Euthanasia Performed?

Usually, it is administered via IV. The veterinarian will put a needle into the vein. After that, they give an overdose of a drug called Pentobarbitone. This renders your pet unconscious and then shuts down the part of its brain that keeps its heart beating. Your pet will pass before the injection is over.

Does It Hurt Them?

No, it is painless, except when the IV is put in. Other than that, it is painless, and they will pass with no fear.

What Happens After They Pass?

Usually, you will see your pet lying there with its eyes open after they die, since they have different eyelids. But you can be comforted by knowing that they are at peace.

You may see bodily fluids since their muscles will relax and release them. Your vet may cover up that portion of their body.

It's OK to cry when your pet is euthanized. Your pet is your companion, and it has spent much time with you, becoming part of your family. Afterward, you may elect to get their ashes or have the body sent to an animal cemetery. They will always be in your heart, though.
