Ultrasounds FAQs

At Desert Forest Animal Hospital, serving Cave Creek and the nearby region, we provide a range of diagnostics for pets, including ultrasounds. Our veterinarians review the results and, from there, will provide an appropriate course of action. Let's look at some of the questions that we run into regarding ultrasound testing for pets.

Does an Ultrasound Emit Radiation?

If you're worried about radiation exposure, you'll be pleased to know that ultrasounds don't use radiation. Instead, this technology uses soundwaves that bounce off organs and soft tissue. The soundwaves that bounce back are recorded by the machine.

How Long Does an Ultrasound Take?

Generally, it takes between 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the cooperation of the patient and the type of ultrasound. Echocardiograms, for instance, take a bit longer than an abdominal ultrasound.

Will My Pet Need an Anesthetic?

The procedure is painless, so an anesthetic isn't necessary. Your furry friend may, however, receive one if he or she is having a biopsy at the same time.

Is Sedation Necessary?

We use sedation on an as-needed basis. Some patients have no problem undergoing an ultrasound and don't require any sedation. Pets, on the other hand, who could pose a threat to our staff or themselves during the procedure may require sedation. It's also possible a pet will need sedation if he or she is fidgety because we won't be able to get a clear image without keeping your cat or dog still.

When Will I Get the Results?

Typically, after your pet undergoes the ultrasound, we will have the results 24 hours or later. During this time, our veterinarians will read the results and determine if any problems were found and if further testing might be necessary.
